Many health issues can cause infertility. For instance, women may have irregular periods, endometriosis, hormonal imbalances, and/or painful periods. Men may have a low sperm count or erectile dysfunction. These problems can lower your sex drive, make it difficult to conceive, or even cause anxiety or depression.
While there are Western solutions to a number of these issues, they often involve surgery, hormone treatments, or prescription drugs. Acupuncture is a gentle technique that can assist with IVF, IUI, and infertility treatments. Additionally, acupuncture and Chinese herbs can be used to help regulate a woman’s periods, thus helping to increase chances of conception.

How Can Acupuncture Help?
Acupuncture is a safe, painless way to treat fertility issues in both men and women. This is done by working with the body’s natural flow of life force energy or “Qi.” There are three ways to get Qi: it is inherited from our parents, we get it from the food we eat, or we obtain it from the environment around us. We want to increase the flow of blood and Qi to the sex organs. Once this energy is flowing freely, the body can begin to heal itself.
My patient and I work together to discover the right treatment plan for his or her needs. This includes taking the pulse, tongue diagnosis, and a patient interview to determine the acupuncture points used.
There are acupoints related to conception that can be activated both on the front and back of the body. In fact there is an energy meridian called the Conception Vessel located from the mouth all the way down to the area around the genitals called the perineum. Not only does addressing these points help your body free up the Qi it needs to heal – treatment can improve your energy level, relieve stress, assist digestive disorders, improve libido, regulate periods and ovulation, and increase erection strength. That is the benefit of working holistically with the body’s life force energy. We aren’t just treating a fertility issue, but assisting the entire body in healing itself.
